How To Put On Dog Harness
Choose the Right Chest Harness:
Select a chest harness that fits your pet's size and body type. Ensure the harness can comfortably secure onto your pet while preventing them from escaping.
Prepare the Harness:
Adjust the buckles to a slightly loose fit. Unfasten all the straps of the chest harness and lay it flat on the ground.
Relax Your Dog:
Ensure your dog is in a relaxed state before putting on the chest harness. If your dog is not accustomed to wearing a harness or easily gets excited, consider some relaxation training beforehand.
Put on the Harness:
Guide the harness over your dog's head and position it on their body. Adjust the straps to ensure the front and back parts of the harness are correctly positioned on your dog.
Fasten the Chest Harness Straps:
Take the male buckle, loop it around the left leg, pass it over the dog's back through the top tie rope, then pass the female buckle through the right leg, and fasten the male buckle.
Adjust the Fit:
Slide the adjustment buckles on the chest and neck straps to achieve a snug and comfortable fit for your dog.
Check the Fit:
Ensure the harness is secure and comfortable, allowing your dog to move freely without any restriction or discomfort. Avoid making it too tight, which could cause breathing difficulties, or too loose, which could allow your dog to escape. Let your dog walk around for a while to observe the harness's comfort and stability. Tip: You should be able to easily slip two fingers between the harness and your dog's body for the best fit.
Training Cooperation:
Use your palm to guide your dog to touch it, then reward them. This helps teach your dog to cooperate actively when putting on the harness. When your dog successfully wears the harness, provide positive feedback with treats, petting, or toys.
Repeat Training:
Repeat the above process multiple times. Each time, remove the harness after successfully putting it on, then practice again. Continue until your dog becomes accustomed to and willingly cooperates with wearing the harness.
Introduce a Command:
Once your dog is familiar with the process, introduce a specific command, such as "let's go," just before they touch your palm or prepare to wear the harness. This helps build a conditioned response. With patience and consistent training, most dogs can learn to wear a harness easily. This not only makes daily walks more convenient but also enhances the quality of interaction between you and your pet.
